Blue Helmets from Senegal
United Nations Assistant Secretary-General for Field Support, Anthony Banbury, visited the town of Kidal in northern Mali. Located in a remote corner of the Sahara desert, Kidal is a last stronghold to rebel Tuareg groups, that overran entire north of the country in early 2012. Since signing a peace accord with the Malian government in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso, regular army and civil administration is trickling back, with strong support of the international community. Since July 1st, African – led military mission has became United Nations Peacekeeping Force in Mali. The logistic task of supporting such heavy military presence in this remote location is daunting.
