Protesters Clash With Riot Police; Quito, Ecuador, Aug 2015
Featured above are protesters clashing with riot police in Quito during a nation-wide general strike against President Rafael Correa. Thousands of indigenous activists, unionists, environmentalists and members of the political opposition took part in the strike.
Protesters criticized proposed constitutional changes that would let Correa run for office again, without calling for a public referendum on the matter. Refusal to consult Indigenous groups on mining and oil exploration on their traditional lands, a new labor code that is seen by many as constricting on freedom of association and protest, and increased taxes were also primary reasons for the strike
