Police Utilize Riot Shields During General Strike; Quito, Ecuador, Aug 2015

A general strike by a broad coalition in Ecuador not-satisfied with President Rafael Correa has paralyzed the nation. Thousands of indigenous activists, unionists, environmentalists and members of the political opposition took part in the strike. Protesters criticized proposed constitutional changes that would let Correa run for office again, without calling for a public referendum on the matter. Refusal to consult Indigenous groups on mining and oil exploration on their traditional lands, a new labor code that is seen by many as constricting on freedom of association and protest, and increased taxes were also primary reasons for the strike

Protesters from Potosi, Bolivia demonstrate in support of a civic committee that is seeking to negotiate an end to a 10-day-old general strike in the city, which is a provincial capital. Potosi depends heavily on mining and its residents have been hit hard by a slump in mineral prices. The demonstrators are demanding the central government put more money into public works projects, calling for the construction of hospitals, roads and an international airport to be built in their region as part of a 26-point plan for the government.

Hundreds of South Asian labourers took to the streets in Dubai on Tuesday to protest unpaid wages and working conditions, prompting the emirate to mobilise riot police. Local reports said the striking workers ripped down corrugated iron fences at a development belonging to Emaar Properties and even came onto the streets to block traffic near the Dubai Mall. The sight of protesting labourers is jarring in a country where demonstrations and unionising are illegal and could easily lead to deportation.
